Ainda que a população de idosos na América Latina e no Caribe seja menor que a de outras regiões do mundo, como a da Europa Oriental e de alguns países asiáticos, é inegável que a estrutura etária da população latino-americana está mudando. Segundo os dados da Comissão Econômica para a América Latina (CEPAL), a proporção da população de 65 anos ou mais na região passará de 8% em 2000, para 14.1% em 2025 e 22.6% em 2050.
